There was a negative low tide this morning, so my son and I headed to Baby Makapu'u to check out the tide pools. We saw many animals but the best was this box crab. Do you see it in the picture?

We were actually watching a convex crab dart across the sand when we noticed this "rock" also moving. Curious and a little puzzled, I put the rock and some ocean water in my bucket. The rock then squirted water at me! That's when we noticed the "rock" had legs and eye stalks - it was a box crab! Very cool! This box crab is common in Hawaii but hard to spot because it buries itself in the sand and blends in with the reef. Why are they called box crabs you ask? Their front flat claws, which protect the crab's front surface, give the crab a box-like shape.
